On November 7, 2018, The University of Nairobi, Kisumu Campus, hosted the first ever Mr. and Miss Environment Kenya, Kisumu County; an event organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the County Government of Kisumu. The objective was to create awareness and develop a generation of environment enthusiasts and advocates. All the contestants were expected to be the County Environmental Peace Ambassadors who will spearhead Green Initiatives and address problems related to environmental degradation within the County.

Shally Atieno, a student at the University of Nairobi, Kisumu Campus, was among the twenty four (24) contestants who were drawn from the seven (7) sub-counties within the County. The contestants were given opportunity to show-case their modelling talents in various categories which included: traditional wear, professional wear and dinner wear. In each category, the contestants were expected to bring out the theme of the event. In the dinner wear category, there was a session where contestants were asked random questions in relation to environmental issues to test their knowledge. Bair Otieno and Grace Achola emerged as the winners and were crowned Mr. and Miss Environment Kenya, Kisumu County, respectively.

During the event, the County Government of Kisumu recognized and presented awards to environment champions in various sectors, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Civil Society, corporates, manufacturers and individuals who have demonstrated, in various ways, their support for environmental activities.

The event was attended by Mr. Salmon Orimba (County Executive Committee Member, Water Irrigation, Environment and Natural Resources), Mr. Maurice Owino (Chief Officer, Water Irrigation, Environment and Natural Resources), Mr. Dan Ong’or (Director, Research, Policy and Strategy Development) and Mr. Ken Koyooh (Director, Conservation and Stewardship), and stakeholders and partners.
