On April 10, 2017, Kisumu Campus received over 100 new students for the distance-learning Bachelor of Education (BEd) (Arts) and Master of Education (MEd) (Administration and Planning) in the School of Continuing and Distance Education and School of Education, respectively. The students were taken through an orientation programme which included registration, issuing of teaching timetables and tour of Campus facilities (Library, information and communication technology (ICT) laboratories and the Complex generally.

Addressing the students during the orientation, Dr. Vincent Machuki, the Campus Director welcomed the students and briefed them on both the corporate (University) and Campus management structures. He informed the students that the University is committed to meeting the regulatory body, Commission of University Education (CUE’s) requirements and that Kisumu Campus was inspected by the CUE team and found to be in compliance with the standards. The Director further stated that a Surveillance Audit of the Campus was conducted by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to gauge the Campus’s conformity with the revised ISO 9001:2015 standards. The auditors gave a generally positive exit report, pointing out a few areas of concern that needed addressing. Students were informed of the existing service departments, including the offices of the Assistant Dean of Students and Counsellor, Security, Library and ICT, which provide services that support their learning at the Campus.

Dr. Raphael Nyonje, the Coordinator, School of Continuing and Distance Education (SCDE), Kisumu Campus clarified to the students that the programme was a ‘distance-learning’, and not a ‘school-based’ and explained the difference. He urged the students to take their work seriously and ensure the required contact hours are met.

Dr. Nicholas Kut and Dr. Khatete, Programme Coordinators for the Department of Educational Studies and the Department of Administration and Planning, respectively, introduced the lecturers present and briefed the students on the programme structure, explained the timetables and passed the message of welcome from the chairmen of their respective departments.
