Uplifting the poor Linkoping university/ University of Nairobi

Date & Time: From 2013-02-15
To 2013-02-16
Description of Conference

About the conference

BagLinköping University in partnership with Nairobi University organized a conference in Nairobi on 14-16 February 2013. Venue was KSTC at Ngong rd, Nairobi.

The theme for the conference was "Uplifting the Poor", which aimed to show positive examples of how people can improve their livelihood and get out of poverty. Poor people were given a chance to express their voice how they succeeded to get out of poverty and what challenges they faced.

How can we learn from their experience? In the conference we have been discussing different paths of change: business, education, sports and technology. The participants choosed two of the four key areas (entrepreneurship, education, sport and technology) and were encouraged to contribute with an abstract, as well as experience in round table discussion.

The ambition was that participants from many different areas and skills (teachers, researchers, stakeholders, donors, businessmen, sportsmen, technicians etc) attend and give input to discuss challenges and improvement.

The conference started with a slum walk in Kibera and a visit to a secondary school to get preferences, then two days with key-note speakers and seminars, where participants contributed with their own experiences.
