About the National Tree Planting Campaign
The National Tree Planting Campaign was launched in December 2022 by President William Ruto as part of Kenya’s commitment to achieving a 30% forest cover by 2032. The campaign’s primary objective is to plant 15 billion trees over a ten-year period, a monumental task that seeks to address the adverse effects of climate change and reverse decades of deforestation.

The campaign is in its second year and has mobilized communities, schools, government institutions, and private sector partners to actively participate in planting and nurturing trees. To date, over 750 million trees have already been planted nationwide (according to the Kenya Forest Service), demonstrating remarkable progress and a collective commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Role of Universities in the Campaign
Public universities have been allocated a critical role in the success of this campaign. They are expected to plant and nurture a million trees within the next three years. As hubs of knowledge and innovation, universities are mandated to not only plant trees but also educate students and staff on sustainable environmental practices. Additionally, universities are encouraged to collaborate with local communities and environmental organizations to expand their impact.

During the occasion, 20 Gratonion ornamental shrubs were planted with the aim of beautifying the campus, promoting biodiversity, and enhancing environmental quality. The Kisumu City Department of Environment has directed all businesses within the City to beautify their frontage. The initiative also serves as an educational platform to instil a culture of environmental responsibility among students, staff, and the community.

The campus Registrar, Bernard Njuguna, commended the campus community for their dedication to the cause. He noted that the tree planting activity was not just an event but a continuous commitment to conservation of our environment.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Speaking during the event, Professor Rambo stated, “Our participation in the National Tree Planting Campaign underscores our commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. By planting trees today, we are not only contributing to the national goal but also enhancing our campus environment for generations to come.”

The University of Nairobi Kisumu Campus remains committed to making its contribution towards the one million tree target set for universities, with plans to organize regular tree planting exercises and environmental awareness programmes," he added.

The success of the National Tree Planting Campaign relies on collective efforts from all sectors, and the University of Nairobi Kisumu Campus was proud to play its part in securing a greener and more sustainable future for Kenya.
