The Public Service Commission (PSC) internship programme at the University of Nairobi, Kisumu Campus, has, over the years, gained traction. It provides an invaluable opportunity for graduates to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and professional environment. Interns get to work across various departments, including reception and administration, where they learn crucial skills such as effective communication and customer service. They are the first point of contact for clients visiting the campus. They  respond to inquiries and direct individuals to the appropriate offices.


Departmental Experience and Skills Gained

1.    Reception and Administration:
Interns are first stationed at the reception area, where they develop essential skills in communication and public relations. They learn to handle inquiries efficiently and direct visitors or students to the correct departments, fostering skills in multitasking and customer engagement.


2.    Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:
Working in this faculty, interns gain exposure to data management and documentation. One key skill acquired is critical thinking, as they assist with organizing academic records and facilitating communication between students and faculty members.


3.    Faculty of Business and Management Sciences:
Here, interns participate in record keeping and financial management tasks, acquiring analytical skills by assisting with budgeting, data entry, and maintaining financial reports. This hands-on experience is crucial for anyone pursuing a career in business administration.


4.    Faculty of Law:
Interns in the Faculty of Law get the opportunity to engage in legal documentation and case file management. One vital skill learned is attention to detail, as accuracy is crucial when handling legal records and preparing briefs.


5.    ICT Department:
In the ICT department, interns are exposed to technical support and troubleshooting. They gain practical experience in network management, software installation, and data backup, equipping them with essential IT support skills needed in today’s technology-driven world.


6.    Library:
Working in the library enables interns to develop skills in cataloguing, digital archiving, and assisting users with research tools. One key skill acquired is information literacy, which helps interns manage and organize vast amounts of information efficiently.


7.    Bookstore:
At the bookstore, interns learn inventory management and customer service. They gain experience in stock taking, record keeping, assisting customers with purchases, and developing skills in organization and retail management.
