It did not come as surprise, to those who have interacted with him closely, when news broke that Edgar Odongo Ochieng had won the 7th African Organisation for Standardization (ARSO) National Essay Competition this past November.
Edgar is a bright and gifted third year undergraduate law student, who has topped his class since joining the University of Nairobi, School of Law at Kisumu Campus in 2018. Besides, he has been a regular and promising participant in moot court competitions within the university.
Edgar beat 186 students from universities and colleges in Kenya in the competition coordinated by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). The objective of the essay competition, according to the KEBS, was to generate and sustain “awareness for standardisation among the youth in the African Continent.” The competition, which targeted students below the age of 35, required entrants to submit their 1,000 to 1,200-word essays on the theme, “The role of Standardisation in resolving and addressing the socio-economic issues for the Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons and creating durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.”
With his win, Edgar will represent Kenya at the Eastern African Regional competition. Thereafter, the continent and the world lies ahead for Edgar to conquer. The Kisumu Campus and the wider UoN community wishes him the best in his conquests. Edgar’s recent win, however, came on the same year that he suffered great personal loss, with the passing on of his dear mother early this year.
